- Brythonic "of the Britons, Welsh," 1884, from Welsh Brython, cognate with L. Britto (see BRITON (Cf. Briton)). Introduced by Professor John Rhys to avoid the confusion of using Briton/British with reference to ancient peoples, religions, and languages.
