affable

affable (adj.) late 15c., from O.Fr. afable (14c.), from L. affabilis "approachable, courteous, kind, friendly," lit. "who can be (easily) spoken to," from affari "to speak to," from ad- "to" (see AD- (Cf. ad-)) + fari "to speak" (see FAME (Cf. fame)). Related: Affably.
