-dom abstract suffix of state, from O.E. dom "statute, judgment" (see DOOM (Cf. doom)), already active as a suffix in O.E. (Cf. freodom, wisdom); from stem *do- "do" + *-moz abstract suffix. Cf. cognate Ger. -tum, O.H.G. tuom.
