Mahayana

Mahayana type of Buddhism practiced in northern Asia, 1868, from Sanskrit, from maha "great," from PIE root *meg- "great" (see MAGNATE (Cf. magnate)) + yana "vehicle," from PIE root *ei- "to go" (see ION (Cf. ion)).
