incinerate (v.) 1550s, from M.L. incineratus "reduced to ashes," pp. of incinerare, from L. in- "into" (see IN- (Cf. in-) (2)) + cinis (gen. cineris) "ashes," from PIE root *keni- "dust, ashes" (Cf. Gk. konis "dust"). Used earlier in English as a pp. adj. meaning "reduced to ashes" (early 15c.). Related: Incinerated; incinerating.
