salaam Muslim greeting, 1610s, from Arabic salam (also in Urdu, Persian), lit. "peace" (Cf. Heb. shalom); in full, (as)salam 'alaikum "peace be upon you," from base of salima "he was safe" (Cf. ISLAM (Cf. Islam), MUSLIM (Cf. Muslim)).
