opportunity (n.) late 14c., from O.Fr. opportunite (13c.), from L. opportunitatem (nom. opportunitas) "fitness, suitableness, favorable time," from opportunus (see OPPORTUNE (Cf. opportune)). Opportunity cost attested from 1911.
