Gerald masc. proper name, introduced by the Normans, from O.Fr. Giralt, from O.H.G. Gerwald, "spear-wielder," from P.Gmc. *girald, from *ger "spear" + base of waltan "to rule" (Cf. O.E. wealdan). The name often was confused with GERARD (Cf. Gerard).
