-most superlative suffix of adjectives and adverbs, from O.E. -mest (altered in Middle English by influence of MOST (Cf. most)), a double superlative, from -mo, -ma (Cf. O.E. forma "first," meduma "midmost"), cognate with L. -mus, + -EST (Cf. -est).
