-ity suffix forming abstract nouns from adjectives, meaning "condition or quality of being ______," from M.E. -ite, from O.Fr. -ité and directly from L. -itatem (nom. -itas), suffix denoting state or condition, composed of connective -i- + -tas (see -TY (Cf. -ty) (2)).
